Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy insists he has reached peak physical and mental condition just as the race for CAF inter-club qualification enters its “red zone.”
After a campaign hampered by nagging injuries, the 22-year-old has emerged as a cornerstone of the Amakhosi backline. With 20 appearances and two goals to his name this season, the son of the legendary Fabian McCarthy is no longer just a “prospect”—he is a pivotal figure in the Glamour Boys’ pursuit of a top-three finish.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s high-stakes Betway Premiership clash against Magesi FC at the Moses Mabhida Stadium (18:00), Aden McCarthy opened up about the discipline required to stay on the pitch.
“Mentally and physically, I’m in the best shape I’ve been in all season,” McCarthy told journalists. “After those early injury setbacks, I’ve put a massive emphasis on recovery and looking after my muscles. At this level, knowing how to manage your body is everything.”
While his fitness is back, McCarthy’s momentum has been checked by discipline. He returns to the squad this weekend after sitting out the 1-0 win over Durban City due to suspension—a recurring theme that has tested his patience.
“Missing ‘decider’ games because of suspension is a terrible feeling. Missing the CAF game especially hurt. It’s frustrating because you want to be out there helping the team when it matters most.”
Chiefs currently sit fifth, but with two games in hand over Sekhukhune United and AmaZulu, their destiny is in their own hands. A win against Magesi could catapult them into the top three, depending on other results.
For McCarthy, the mission is simple: Unified Vision.
“We all need to have the same vision: finishing in the top three. We can’t control what other teams do, but we can control our own work rate. You have to treat Magesi with the same respect as a Soweto Derby or a Sundowns game. These are the teams fighting for their lives, and that’s where you truly earn your points.”
