Malawi: Wanderers attach head coach to Scottish side

Malawi league champions Mighty Wanderers FC have sent their coach Bob Mpinganjira to Scottish side Partick Thistle FC for an attachment ahead of the 2026 FDH Premiership season.

Wanderers football director David Kanyenda confirmed that Bob Mpinganjira will be attached to the second-tier Scottish Championship team for three weeks to enrich his career through a Coach Education and Professional Development programme.

“As you heard from the Club President [Dr Thomson Mpinganjira] during the Presidential Ball, the head coach will be attached to Partick Thistle Football Club in Scotland where he will learn various technicalities in terms of player development, conducting training, match preparations, coaching philosophy and various other aspects,” Kanyenda told the club’s media.

What study tour for coach Bob Mpinganjira means

He said the coach’s study tour of Scottland was in line with club president Thomson Mpinganjira’s vision to professionalise the team.

“This arrangement reaffirms the President’s vision in transforming Wanderers into a much more professional establishment. It is one way of empowering our technical panel with skills of delivering their assignments whilst matching international standards,” he added.

The coach has since thanked the club’s management for sponsoring the tour, saying he hopes to upgrade his coaching knowledge and skills.

What Thistle FC director Baraclough said on study tour

Thistle FC sporting director Ian Baraclough confirmed that they are ready to host Mpinganjira as part of its professional development programme.

“We are pleased to host coach Bob so that he can observe and engage with our coaching staff, gain insight into our coaching philosophy, and participate in knowledge exchange sessions covering player development, training methodologies, and club operations,” he is quoted saying.

Baraclough said he hopes the visit of the coach would open an opportunity for future collaboration between the seven-time Malawi league champions and the Scottish team.

Formed in 1938, Thistle FC are currently in second place of the league, five points behind leaders St Johnstone FC. The last game for Thistle was on Tuesday when they drew two-all with Raith Rovers FC.
