Temwa Chawinga gets Kansas City Current greenlight

Malawian superstar Temwa Chawinga has received the greenlight for a return to action at Kansas City Current FC in America’s National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

The availability of the 2025 FIFA Women Footballer of the Year Award nominee is good news for her club and the Malawi women’s national team ahead of the FIFA Series and Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals.

The Scorchers’ forward has not played competitively since October due to an abductor injury. Temwa Chawinga last featured for Malawi during a game against Zambia in February 2025.

Good news on Temwa Chawinga after lengthy injury

Now, the American side has cleared her return to competitive action after recovering fully from the long-term injury.

“The Kansas City Current has removed forward Temwa Chawinga from the season ending injury (SEI) list. She was placed on SEI after sustaining a lower body injury towards the end of the 2025 regular season,” reads the club’s statement.

“Chawinga is the two-time defending NWSL MVP and Golden Boot winner, having totalled 35 goals and nine assists in 48 regular season appearances between the 2024 and 2025 campaigns.”

When is NWSL star likely to play for Kansas City?

Temwa Chawinga is expected in action when Kansas City Current face Gotham FC at CPKC Stadium on Saturday.

Last week, Malawi coach Lovemore Fazili named the 2025 NWSL Golden Boot Award winner in the squad for the FIFA Series scheduled for Kenya despite the uncertainty then regarding her availability.

Now, playing for her club ensures her match fitness ahead of the FIFA Series.
