FC Porto: Fofana plays super sub role again but Primeira Liga leaders drop points

It looked like Seko Fofana had done it again for Portuguese Primeira Liga title contenders FC Porto on Saturday. The Ivorian came off the bench to score in sensational fashion in second half stoppage time but after taking a late lead, the leaders conceded in the final moments to draw Famalicão 2-2 on Saturday evening.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations champion came on for an injured Rodrigo Mora at the end of the first half in a tight home match for Os Dragões as they attempted to claim a fifth consecutive victory in all competitions. After taking the lead in the 35th minute through Alberto Costa, Brazilian forward Sorriso restored parity for the visitors early in the second half.

Before the March FIFA window, Fofana came off the bench to win it late for Porto in a massive win over Braga and he provided another moment of magic in his first match back from national team duty. Collecting the ball on the left wing, the midfielder powered past a couple of defenders to fire a low effort past Famalicão goalkeeper Lazar Carević in the first minute of stoppage time.

Short-lived celebrations for FC Porto

The goal sparked dramatic celebrations at the Estádio do Dragão and it seemed like the league leaders had secured another cinematic victory with the late strike.

However, Famalicão were not in the mood for a storybook ending. After a frantic scramble in the penalty area in the ninth minute of stoppage time, Rodrigo Pinheiro fired in off the post to salvage a draw for the visitors.

And now the title race tightens up. Porto are five points clear of defending champions and rivals Sporting CP but have played one more match. If Sporting take advantage of their game in hand, the leaders cannot afford another slip up with only six matches remaining.

To his credit, Fofana made the most of his call to emergency duty in place of Mora. The on loan midfielder from Rennes was awarded Man of the Match by Portuguese sports outlet VSports for his efforts.
