Darikwa demands more from promoted Lincoln City FC

Amid euphoria of securing EFL Sky Bet Championship promotion, Zimbabwean Tendayi Darikwa has demanded more from his Lincoln City FC troops.

The Warriors defender skippered the Imps to a 2-1 victory over Reading FC at the Select Car Leasing Stadium on Monday.

The decisive three points earned Michael Skubala’s men promotion to the second-tier league of English football for the first time in 65 years.

WhyTendai Darikwa wants more from Lincoln

With the ultimate target reached, you would think this is the time for the Imps to sit on their laurels and bask in the glory. Not with Darikwa.

The Lincoln FC captain has urged his charges to now switch their focus to the ultimate EFL League One title.

With four games to the finish line, the Imps are 12 points clear of second-placed Cardiff City. It is such a big cushion, but the Zimbabwean is a perfectionist who wants a perfect ending to the promotion party.

“We’ve got a few more targets we want to hit, and we feel there’s more history for us to make,” the Warriors defender told his club’s website.

“We still want to go on and win the title, so we’ll enjoy the moment but then our focus will shift to that.”

On leading Lincoln City to promotion

The Nottingham-born player added that he is proud to lead a second team to a league promotion in his career. Previously, he steered Wigan Athletic to the League One title in the 2021/22 season.

“I’m proud to lead the team out every time I wear the armband, but I just want to play my part,” the right-back explained.

“I’ll do whatever I can for the team, to be the first Lincoln City team to win promotion to the second tier for 65 years is a great sense of pride for myself and to lead this group makes it even more memorable.

“I’ve experienced promotions before, but this one feels different. To play my part in this club’s special rise is incredible.”

The Skubala-led team will host Leyton Orient FC on Saturday. The next games are against Stevenage FC away, Wycombe CF at home on 18th and 25th April 18 then Port Vale FC at home.
