South Africa head coach Hugo Broos expressed satisfaction after Bafana Bafana's 2-0 triumph over Uganda Cranes at Namboole Stadium on Friday in a pivotal Group K clash of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
“It was a difficult game, especially in the first half. Uganda’s defense was solid and we created few chances,” Broos remarked. “In the second half, we improved and scored two goals. Our goal was to win and top the group and we achieved it. Now we want to finish the group as leaders with a win against South Sudan at home.”
After a cagey first half, substitutes Thapelo Morena and Patrick Maswanganyi delivered for South Africa in the second period. Morena broke the deadlock in the 49th minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse by Uganda’s Taddeo Lwanga to slot past goalkeeper Ismail Watenga.
Maswanganyi added a second in the 89th minute with a brilliant turn and finish, securing all three points for Bafana Bafana and ending Uganda’s unbeaten run in the qualifiers.
Both Uganda and South Africa had already booked their tickets to the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. Uganda will look to regroup and end the campaign on a high when they face Congo on Tuesday while South Africa will aim to solidify their position at the top of Group K with a win over South Sudan.
