Ex-Ghana defender, Ibrahim Tanko has asserted that, the nation needs to keep Otto Addo at the helm of the senior national team despite the poor outing in the AFCON qualifiers.
Otto Addo led the four time African champions to three draws, three defeats in six 2025 AFCON qualifiers - finishing bottom of group F. The poor run to the journey for Morocco means, Ghana will not be at the continental football showpiece for the first time in 20-years which has left the entire nation fuming.
Ibrahim Tanko, who was an assistant coach of the Black Stars under the guidance of now Sudan manager, James Kwesi Appiah in 2017, spoke to Flashscore.
"I don’t believe the job is too big for him. He came in at a very challenging time. Remember, he took us to the World Cup in Qatar, though the performance wasn’t as expected, and then he was replaced by Chris Hughton, who was the technical director,” he said.
“His return was always going to come with pressure. I don’t believe we should sack him; instead, we need to give him a chance. With the World Cup qualifiers coming up, should we really be bringing in a new coach?
“He just signed a three-year contract and if you sack him, you’ll have to pay. Plus, there’s no guarantee that the next coach will make an immediate impact,” Coach Ibrahim Tanko added.
Ghana is a four time African champions, however, they have faced trophy drought for 42-years since last winning the gong in Libya.
Performance at the AFCON has also dipped drastically - exiting at the round 16 in 2019 with two successive group stage eliminations in 2021 and 2023 in Cameroon and Ivory Coast respectively.
Ghana will now shift focus to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier which begin in March with a first home game against Chad.
