Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put has urged his team to regroup and focus after a disappointing 2-0 defeat to South Africa in a Group K 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Friday evening at Namboole Stadium.
“We didn’t play well and lost possession at crucial moments. I am not happy with the performance, but we must keep our heads up because we have a game against Congo in a few days. We need to win that to make our fans happy,” said Put during the post-match press conference.
The Cranes’ unbeaten run in the qualifiers came to an end as South Africa leapfrogged them to claim the top spot in the group. Substitute Thapelo Morena struck early in the second half following a defensive lapse and Patrick Maswanganyi sealed the victory with a late goal.
Tactical Struggles for Uganda Uganda's approach relied heavily on defensive solidity with Taddeo Lwanga and Khalid Aucho deployed as holding midfielders.
However, the lack of creativity in attack left the team unable to respond to South Africa's dominance in possession, especially in the second half. While substitutions, including Travis Mutyaba and Hakim Kiwanuka brought some attacking intent, the Cranes failed to capitalize on their chances, with Bafana Bafana maintaining a disciplined defensive structure throughout.
Despite the setback, Uganda and South Africa both secured their places in the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. The Cranes now turn their attention to their final group game against Congo with Paul Put emphasizing the need for a strong response to lift the spirits of their fans.
Meanwhile South Africa will host South Sudan, aiming to solidify their position at the top of Group K.
