Malawi under-20 national women’s football team coach Maggie Chombo-Sadiki got her prediction right as her team beat the Central African Republic 3-1 on Sunday.
In a post-match interview with the Football Association of Malawi media, Chombo-Sadiki attributed the convincing win to the early goals her players scored.
“Our plan was to score early, and we succeeded with two goals in the first 15 minutes. The third goal before half-time was crucial,” she said.
Fatima Lali’s double and Olivia Phikani's strike in the second half at Bingu National Stadium put Malawi a step closer to the second round of the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers.
Syliviane Passib Sate scored the visitors’ consolation goal in the 78th minute to maintain faint hopes of a comeback in the return leg on May 18.
Four nations will represent Africa at the World Cup in August next year.
