The Malawi under-20 national women’s football team came from behind to hold the Central African Republic (CAR) 1-1 on Sunday.

The Junior Scorchers advanced to the next round of the 2026 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers 4-2 on aggregate after winning the home tie 3-1 on May 11.

Played on neutral turf in Douala, Cameroon, CAR used home ground advantage as they scored in the first half.

Whatever Malawi coach Maggie Chombo-Sadiki told her charges during the break paid dividends. Striker Faith Chinzumu, a late addition to the squad alongside Rose Kadzere, equalized for Malawi three minutes after the restart.

CAR tried to push for more goals, but the visitors held their own to wind down the clock. The Malawians date either Djibouti or South Sudan in the next round.

The Malawians’ home win, courtesy of Fatima Lali’s double and Olivia Phikani's strike, proved decisive in the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup Qualifier.
