French champions Paris Saint-Germain have finally captured the UEFA Champions League and the Parisian club did it in style on Saturday. Achraf Hakimi opened the scoring and Désiré Doué scored twice in a 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan at the Allianz Arena in Munich for PSG's first-ever Champions League title after years of futility.
Le PSG jumped on their Italian opposition early and did not let up. A brilliant team build up initiated by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from the left wing saw the French club complete a series of intelligent passes before the ball ended up with Hakimi who was left with a simple first-time finish to put his team ahead in the 12th minute.
Doué then doubled the lead before twenty minutes were gone when Ousmane Dembélé set up the 19-year-old forward for a second goal. Inter were still within two goals by halftime but it was hardly a contest as PSG continued to dominate. Doué added his second goal soon after the hour mark before Kvaratskhelia and Senny Mayulu completed the destruction with goals of their own.
Saturday's victory completes a historic season for PSG who have now completed a quadruple. PSG won their first trophy this season in the Trophée des Champions (Super Cup) before capturing France's Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and finally the ultimate prize, the UEFA Champions League. Hakimi finishes the Champions League with four goals and five assists in seventeen games, adding five goals and seven assists in domestic cup and league play.
The season is not over with one more potential trophy for Hakimi and PSG to chase. The club will take part in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States in two weeks to match wits with elite clubs around the world. PSG begin play in Group B on June 15 against Atlético Madrid and will also face Brazil's Botafogo and Seattle Sounders of Major League Soccer.
