AFC Champions League: Luis Asue finishes off Shanghai Shenhua victory

Equatorial Guinea national team striker Luis Asue played a key role once again for Shanghai Shenhua as the Chinese club earned their first victory in the AFC Champions League Elite on Wednesday.

Asue’s header put the hosts beyond reach in a 2-0 victory over Korean club FC Seoul, moving the Chinese Super League club into fifth place on the table in Asia’s top continental club competition. Late on, Wilson Manafa’s floated cross found the run of Asue who guided the ball in past Seoul goalkeeper Kang Hyeon-Mu in the 89th minute.

The former Moreirense and Braga player now has goals in three of his last four matches with his club, also scoring in their previous Champions League match, a 1-1 result against Ulsan HD.

In addition to continental competition, Shanghai Shenhua are in the midst of a close title chase in the Chinese Super League which only has three rounds remaining. Shenhua currently lie three points back of leaders and local rivals Shanghai Port.

Asue was involved in the recent FIFA window for the Equatorial Guinea national team, getting the start in their 1-1 draw against Liberia to conclude an unsuccessful campaign to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His national team career is a major factor in his move to European and eventually Chinese club football, after he previously starred for Equatorial Guinea as an 18-year-old in qualifying for the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Shenhua will continue their title chase with two matches before returning to Champions League action. They host Dalian Yingbo on Sunday before another home match against Shenzhen Xinpengcheng on October 31.
