AFC Champions League: Luis Asue strikes in Shanghai Shenhua draw

Equatorial Guinea international Luis Asue opened the scoring for Shanghai Shenhua as the Chinese club claimed a point in a 1-1 AFC Champions League Elite draw with Ulsan HD.

Early in the second half, Asue fired in a volley from a deflected cross to put the hosts ahead in Shanghai’s second match from the league phase. Ulsan equalized through Gustav Ludwigson after the hour mark and the teams shared the points, Shanghai’s first point from two matches.

After joining Shanghai Shenhua midway through the 2025 season from Portuguese top flight side Moreirense, Asue is beginning to find his form in Chinese football after an inconsistent start. The 24-year-old native of Malabo provided a goal and an assist in Shenhua’s 6-1 victory over Meizhou Hakka in the Chinese Super League and Wednesday’s goal makes it two consecutive matches where Asue has found the net.

Shenhua are in the midst of a tight race for the Super League title. With four league matches remaining, they are three points back of local rivals and defending champions Shanghai Port.

Asue got off to a hot start with goals in each of his first three matches but then failed to score in seven games before returning to scoring form against Meizhou. The striker, developed at Equatoguinean side Cano Sport as well as Portuguese giants Braga, now has 5 goals in 12 matches across all competitions for Shenhua.

Shenhua return to domestic league action after the international break on October 17 away at Qingdao West Coast. It remains to be seen if Asue will be on duty with Equatorial Guinea during the FIFA window with games against Malawi and Liberia in Group H to finish up Nzalang Nacional’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. Asue has 3 goals in 25 appearances for Equatorial Guinea.
