AFC Leopards break rivals Gor Mahia hearts in derby thriller

Kenyan Premier League outfit AFC Leopards secured a superb 1-0 FKF Premier League win against their bitter rivals Gor Mahia at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

Gor Mahia went into the Mashemeji derby having dominated their rivals in the past two seasons. The last time Ingwe had defeated Gor Mahia was during the 2023 season, a 2-1 outcome at the same venue.

However, AFC Leopards under coach Fred Ambani came a determined side looking to end the bad run of results against their nemesis. After a good start, Ingwe almost took the lead when Victor Omune’s long range drive from outside the area went over the bar.

AFC Leopards looked to have dominated Gor Mahia

Gor Mahia responded with a chance of their own when Odhiambo exchanged passes with Kibwage from the middle of the area, but AFC Leopards defender Randi Bakari reacted quickly to make a save.

The game remained a balanced affair until the 25th minute when AFC Leopards took the lead. A delivery from Bakari found the unmarked Julius Masaba, who turned around, amidst a crowd of Gor Mahia players, before sending his one-time effort past Omondi.

The goal stunned Gor Mahia and they almost drew level five minutes later but Kibwage’s glancing header went inches wide. As at the hour mark, AFC Leopards looked to have dominated Gor Mahia in all aspects, with the record Kenyan champions only resorting for long balls to try and unsettle their opponents.

Last season, the fixture did not produce a winner in the two rounds. The first, which was hosted by AFC Leopards, ended in a 0-0 before the second round finished 1-1. Gor Mahia had taken the lead courtesy of Harambee Stars midfielder Austin Odhiambo before Ingwe drew level through Bernard Wanyama.
