AFCON: Idrissa Gana Gueye explains where Senegal can improve for later stages

Senegal midfielder and team leader Idrissa Gana Gueye outlined where the Lions of Teranga will have to improve after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo in Group D at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The veteran elected to not be too harsh on his teammates, considering the strong opponent. “We expected a difficult match against a good DRC team that is consistent in what it does…Today we had opportunities to kill the game, but we take the point and we continue on our way,” the Everton player said in comments recorded by Wiwsport.

Senegal dominated the first half but could not find a way past a Congolese defensive unit that ranks among the best at the tournament. The West Africans paid the price in the second half when their inspired opponents took the lead through Cédric Bakambu around the hour mark. Sadio Mané pulled Senegal back level within ten minutes for the teams to share the points by full time.

But Gueye made sure to provide some constructive criticism after dropping points to the most difficult opponent in the group. Looking ahead, when poor finishing and mistakes can be fatal to the team’s chances, he stressed efficiency in the attack. “We will need to be more efficient when we reach the final phase.”

On Tuesday, Gueye and his teammates will face Benin where a victory should be enough to win the group. The Cheetahs will be another firm test after they overcame Botswana earlier on Saturday by a 1-0 score, leaving them a point behind Senegal and the DRC.
