Zimbabwe will face rivals South Africa at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Morocco on Monday evening without influential defender Teenage Hadebe.
The America-based sweeper picked a leg injury on Friday during a Group B match against Angola. FC Cincinnati’s centre-back limped off before the game ended one-all. Veteran Knowledge Musona scored the equalising goal for Mario Marinica’s men after Gelson had put the Angolans ahead.
Now, the Zimbabwe Football Association, as quoted by Herald Newspaper, confirms that the 30-year-old Major League Soccer (MLS) star will miss the match scheduled for Marrakech Stadium.
Hadebe’s absence is a blow to Marinica, who had selected the MLS player in both matches against Egypt and Angola.
The Romania-born coach must now find a reliable replacement to shore up the defence in the absence of Hadebe.
Zimbabwe anchor the their AFCON group with one point at par with third-placed Angola, while Egypt lead the table on six points, followed by South Africa’s three points.
Monday’s game will kick off at 6:00 pm Central African time, and will be broadcast on television channels such as SuperSport TV channel 222.
