Nigeria coach Eric Chelle was lost for words to describe his national team after they superbly defeated Algeria in the quarter-finals fixture of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco on Saturday.
Striker Victor Osimhen scored his fourth goal of the competition and assisted as Nigeria edged Algeria 2-0 to seal their place in the semi-finals of the 2025 edition in the North African nation.
First, Osimhen rose highest to thunder home a precise Bruno Onyemaechi cross with a powerful header in the 27th minute. Ten minutes later, the Galatasaray forward turned the provider after he slid in Akor Adams to slot it home and double their lead.
“The Nigerian players are very happy, and I am extremely proud of them. We really enjoyed the match. I have worked a lot since taking over my role with the Nigerian national team; we put in a lot of effort during preparations,” Chelle told CAFOnline.com.
“My vision has been implemented in the Nigerian team, and we must continue working in this manner.”
Discussing the win against Algeria at Stade de Marrakech, the former Mali coach said: “The victory we achieved against Algeria was deserved. The match was fantastic, and I am very happy with the win.
“After this match, we have another game, and we will prepare for it. Morocco is a strong team, and there will be pressure in front of the host nation. The best team will win.”
Chelle concluded: “I am proud that we will face Morocco, and I hope it will be a good match, with the best team winning.”
Nigeria in their 16th AFCON semifinal appearance will face hosts Morocco in the semifinal of the tournament. Morocco reached the stage following their 2-0 win against Cameroon.
