AFCON: Nigeria defender Osayi-Samuel targets DR Congo revenge

Nigeria defender Bright Osayi-Samuel has expressed confidence in the Super Eagles squad after their 4-0 win over Mozambique in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] on Monday.

The three time African champions run riot over the Southern African nation at the Fez Stadium with a goal each by Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams and Victor Osimhen’s brace in between.

Nigeria recorded three wins in the group stage beating Tanzania, Nigeria and Tunisia with the big win over Mozambique completing a one hundred percent record so far.

The Birmingham City right-back shared some words with Sporty FM after the game.

“I already know that we had the players that will score goals so if we can make sure that we don’t concede then we have a very good chance of winning and today was first step of getting a clean sheet of the AFCON and we have to keep going and focus on the next game,” Osayi Samuel told SportyFM.

Nigeria are gunning for fourth Africa Cup of Nations

Nigeria will now await the winner between Algeria and DR Congo who will square off in the round of 16 on Tuesday.

DR Congo dented Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after beating them 4-3 on penalty shootouts following a 1-1 draw at full time in the playoffs.

The 28-year-old says he would love to take a revenge against DR Congo but equally expressed readiness to face any opponent.

“It doesn’t matter for me but I think for me DR Congo because they beat us for the World Cup and we need to get our revenge but it really doesn’t matter because we have the best squad and each game will be difficult but I believe we can beat anyone.”

Nigeria are gunning for their fourth Africa Cup of Nations but failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, USA and Mexico.
