Malawi are still searching for their first win of the COSAFA Qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals after dropping points for the second game in a row while Angola and Mozambique put one foot into the Promised Land.

The Junior Flames let go of a lead to draw one-all with Angola at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) AW Muller Stadium.

James Jumbe had given Enos Chatama-coached team the lead with a 50th-minute goal before the Angolans responded through Paulo Luvumbo 19 minutes later to take their tally to four points after having started the Group A race with a 2-1 win over Lesotho two days ago.

The result leaves the Junior Flames chances of reaching the semifinal slim after they started the competition with a similar result against Mozambique two days ago.

Mozambique, just like Angola, have since taken their tally to four points after earning maximum points in another match on Friday when Levonor Tamble’s last-gasp goal earned them a 1-0 win over Lesotho.

In the girls' section for Group A, Lesotho found easy prey in Comoros after baptizing the islanders 10-0 with Lekenyane Mampona, Nteboheleng Soone, Ntsamaeng Tholo (four goals) and Thato Molete (two goals) among the scorers. Lesotho now lead the standings on six points.

In a Group A contest, Zambia were dominant and in control, as they assumed leadership of the group after dispatching Botswana 3-0 at UJ Stadium in Soweto.

Mercy Chipasula set the tone of the pool A proceedings with an early goal in the first half. When play resumed, Natasha Nkaka doubled the lead of the Zambians with a stunner before Hellen Banda completed the job with a last goal.

The top two finishing teams in the boys’ category will book a ticket to the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast next year.

The girls are using the regional qualifiers to prepare for the AFCON finals for their age-group scheduled for Morocco next year.
