AFCON 2025: Uche Ikpeazu set for possible early Uganda arrival

St Johnstone striker Uche Ikpeazu could link up with the Uganda earlier than anticipated ahead of AFCON 2025, with manager Simo Valakari signalling full flexibility regarding the forward’s release for national duty.

Under FIFA regulations, clubs are allowed to retain players called up for AFCON until December 15, meaning Ikpeazu remains eligible for St Johnstone’s next three fixtures.

However, Uganda’s pre-tournament camp in Morocco kicks off on December 8, creating a window for an earlier departure should all parties agree.

Valakari confirmed that while the decision ultimately rests with the club, the player’s preference will weigh heavily in the final call.

“Their training camp starts on the 8th,” Valakari noted. “That’s what they’ve requested. I’ve spoken with Uche. It will be a club decision, he’s our player. But as always, I don’t keep anyone who doesn’t want to be here. There are no grey areas.”

Ikpeazu’s next move is expected to become clear

Ikpeazu could therefore head to Morocco immediately after Saturday’s clash with Raith Rovers.

The towering forward’s uncertain pre-season had a knock-on effect on his involvement this campaign, with the 30-year-old still awaiting his first Premiership start. Valakari acknowledged that the ambiguity surrounding his future shaped early team planning.

“All circumstances affect everything,” he explained. “Uche is a good example. His pre-season situation influenced my team selection at the start. He’s a fantastic player, a brilliant guy, a true centre forward. But because we didn’t know what was happening, we built the team around players we were certain would be here.”

The manager stressed fairness to both the team and the player.

“I won’t keep someone who isn’t here 100 percent,” he added. “It’s not always just about Uche, his minutes, or his form. It was his choice that he missed the start of the season. Everything has consequences.

“At the same time, I’ve been a player. I understand how a player thinks, they’ll always consider what’s best for them. If Uche feels he’s not getting game time here, he might view the pre-AFCON camp as an opportunity. And I’m not holding back any player who feels that way.”

Ikpeazu’s next move is expected to become clear after this weekend’s fixture.
