Arbaminch Ketema forward Ahmed Hussein said he is not looking ahead to be the top scorer award winner in the Ethiopian premier league after he tops the chart with 10 goals.
The former Wolkite Ketema striker scored a hat-trick against Adama Ketema in week 21 of the topflight as he gave Ethiopian national side coach Mesay Teferi an assignment before the 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifier.
“I don’t know why I am not getting call ups. I am not the coach. I am a player. If I get called up, I am available. That is the coach’s decision,” Hussein told Soccer Ethiopia after his impressive performance against Adama Ketema.
Ethiopia are fifth in their World Cup qualifying group after three draws and one loss. Scoring goals has been one of the main problems that the Waliyas faced. After the retirement of Getaneh Kebede from international football the national side failed to get a reliable goal grabber. Now Teferi might be tempted to call up the leading Ethiopian premier league striker to his roster.
Hussein made a bold statement on the race for the top goal king of the league as he said he is not planning on winning it. “I am not worried about the goals I score. My concern is my team. If we win that is the most important thing.”
An Ethiopian player might win the top goal scoring award after the 2021/22 season where Sidama Coffee striker Yigezu Bogale managed to sweep the award. Bogale then summoned to the national side for the CHAN qualifier. Hussien may find himself in a similar situation if his good form continues in the league.
