Veteran Nigeria star and former captain Ahmed Musa has revealed that coach Stephen Keshi is the one who has made the most impact in his career at the senior national team.
Musa, who has made over 100 caps for the Super Eagles, has played under numerous coaches but it is Keshi's leadership that stood out for the current Kano Pillars player. The 32-year-old played under Jose Peseiro, Austin Eguavoen, Gernot Rohr, and even Sunday Oliseh but he pegs his choice for best coach on the late Stephen Keshi.
In a recent interview with Victor Modo on YouTube, Musa described Keshi as a father figure who fostered respect and unity within the Super Eagles squad.
"Late Stephen Keshi brought the best out of the team. The first thing when you come to camp is you have to take off your jewelry, earrings and necklaces. That was his first rule,” Ahmed Musa said. "If you played under Stephen Keshi, you’d enjoy football because on and off the pitch he was with you, encouraging and advising you. He was like a father to us and that brought out the best in us.”
Keshi, who managed Nigeria from 2011 to 2015, led the team to victory in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, the third for the Super Eagles which ended a long wait for the title. His strategy of blending local and foreign-based players, exemplified by Sunday Mba's winning goal in the final against Burkina Faso, proved highly effective.
Keshi, a former player who also won the AFCON in 1994, is considered one of Africa's greatest coaches having also guided Togo to their first World Cup qualification in 2006.
