Former Nigeria Flying Eagles head coach Paul Aigbogun has expressed firm confidence that newly-invited KRC Genk winger Collins Yira Sor possesses the necessary quality to become a significant asset for the senior national team.
The explosive forward earned his debut senior call-up as part of the 23-man squad assembled by head coach Eric Chelle for this month’s highly anticipated four-nation invitational tournament in Jordan.
In an interview with Footy Africa, Aigbogun shared his immense satisfaction regarding the inclusion of the speedy Genk star. The veteran tactician, who played a pivotal role in Sor’s early development, noted that the player’s rare combination of positional intelligence and clinical finishing will prove invaluable to the Super Eagles’ offensive arsenal.
“I am genuinely delighted for Collins (Sor), as his consistent hard work has finally been rewarded with this senior invitation,” Aigbogun remarked. “He is a talent I personally scouted in Port Harcourt during our rebuilding process for the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, and his upward trajectory since that period has been remarkable.”
Aigbogun further highlighted the physical and technical attributes that set the 24-year-old apart from his peers in the European circuits.
“He is fast—exceptionally fast—and offers the tactical versatility to function effectively as both a traditional winger and a central striker. I believe he hasn’t even reached the ceiling of his full potential yet, but I am optimistic he will inject much-needed pace into the national team setup.
“While he was recently clocked as the fastest player in the Belgian Pro League, he is far more than just a speedster; his spatial awareness and composure in front of goal are top-tier. He will undoubtedly be a massive plus for the Super Eagles, and I couldn’t be happier for his progress.”
Sor, who has been in scintillating form for his Belgian employers of late, is no stranger to the international stage. He was a standout performer for Nigeria’s U-20 side under Aigbogun’s tutelage during the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland. His transition to the senior fold is seen by many as the natural evolution of a player who has consistently dominated defensive lines across Europe.
