Jess Thorup, head coach of Al Ahly, spoke after his team’s victory over Young Africans of Tanzania in the CAF Champions League group stage.
Al Ahly secured a 2-0 home win against Young Africans in Matchday Three of the group stage, strengthening their position at the top of the group.
Speaking during the post-match press conference, as quoted by Al Ahly’s official website, Jess Thorup explained that the team played the match after a long absence of international players, stressing that such circumstances require time to regain full rhythm.
“The victory and gaining a new boost of confidence are among the many positives from this match,” Thorup said. “Reaching seven points and moving to the top of the group alone is a very good start for the new year.”
The Danish coach also explained, saying: “I speak continuously with the players and tell them that the competition is strong among everyone, and we are working to have this competition in all positions, and the team is facing a period of intense pressure and needs all elements to be ready.”
Thorup also commented on the participation of Marwan Othman, stating that the player possesses special qualities, which justified his inclusion in the starting lineup.
“He has standout abilities, and that is why he started the match,” Torup said. “I believe he delivered an excellent performance in today’s game.”
Thorup pointed out that all players have defensive and attacking duties, and every coach wants the players to score goals, and that what is important is not who scores the chances, but rather that the victories continue.
