Al Ahly claimed a priceless victory over arch-rivals Zamalek, coming from behind to snatch a 2-1 win in the 131st Cairo Derby at the Cairo International Stadium, closing out Round 9 of the Nile Egyptian League in dramatic fashion.
Zamalek started on the front foot and could have taken an early lead inside four minutes when Oday Dabbagh went one-on-one with Mohamed El Shenawy, who saved the chance. 7 minutes later, winger Nasser Maher went close again but dragged his effort narrowly wide of the post.
Al Ahly responded through Taher Mohamed, whose dangerous cross almost forced an own goal before Yasser Ibrahim’s header flashed just wide in the 13th minute.
The breakthrough came when Zamalek were awarded a penalty. El Shenawy brilliantly denied Abdallah El Said from the spot in the 28th minute, but the referee ordered a retake due to encroachment by an Al Ahly defender. This time, defender Hossam Abdelmaguid stepped up and converted in the 32nd minute to give Zamalek the lead.
The Red Devils roared back after the break. Hussein El Shahat, introduced in the second half, made an instant impact—in the 71st minute, he pounced on Mohamed Sherif’s clever work inside the box, with his shot deflecting off Mohamed Ismail to level the score at 1-1.
The turning point arrived in the 76th minute when Al Ahly were awarded a penalty of their own. Mahmoud Trezeguet kept his composure and slotted home in the 78th minute, completing a memorable comeback for Emad El Nahhas’ men.
The result lifts Al Ahly to 15 points, moving them up to third place in the table with a game in hand that could see them leapfrog Zamalek into first. Zamalek, despite the defeat, remain top with 17 points.
