Al Ahly began their CAF Champions League campaign on a positive note, claiming a 1-0 away victory over Eagle Noir of Burundi in the first leg of the Round of 32, marking the first match in charge for Danish coach Jess Thorup.
The Egyptian giants traveled to the Intwari Stadium in Bujumbura, where they were made to work hard against the Burundian champions. Despite dominating possession, Al Ahly struggled to break down Eagle Noir defense early on.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 36th minute, following a slick exchange between Ben Romdhane and Mohamed Hany, whose driven cross forced an own goal from an Eagle Noir defender, giving Al Ahly the decisive lead.
The visitors maintained the clean sheet until the end of the game to secure a narrow but valuable first-leg victory in Thorup’s debut.
With this result, Al Ahly take a major step toward the group stage of the CAF Champions League as they chase a record-extending 14th continental title.
The return leg will be played next Saturday, 25 October at Cairo International Stadium, where a draw or any win will be enough to confirm Al Ahly’s spot in the group stage.
