Al Ahly Egypt have decided to impose the largest fine in the club’s history on star midfielder Emam Ashour, following his failure to travel with the squad to Zanzibar for the CAF Champions League clash against Young Africans of Tanzania.
In an official statement, Al Ahly announced that Ashour has been fined EGP 1.5 million, surpassing the previous record fine of EGP 1 million (nearly $32,000), which had also been imposed on Ashour himself and on Mahmoud Kahraba in earlier incidents.
The club confirmed that Walid Salah El-Din, Al Ahly’s football director, also decided to suspend Emam Ashour for two weeks in addition to the financial penalty. The punishment came after the player failed to travel with the team on Thursday morning to Zanzibar for the African fixture.
As part of the disciplinary measures, Al Ahly stated that Ashour will train individually throughout the suspension period and will be excluded from group training sessions until February 12.
Al Ahly are set to face Young Africans at 1:00 PM GMT on Saturday at Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar, in the fourth round of the CAF Champions League group stage.
The Red Devils had already defeated Young Africans 2–0 last Friday at Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria, during the third round of the group stage.
Al Ahly currently sit top of Group B in the CAF Champions League with 7 points, while Young Africans are second with 4 points, making the upcoming clash crucial in the race for qualification.
