Al Ahly suffer shock Egypt Cup exit after dramatic defeat to Telecom Egypt “WE”

Al Ahly were knocked out of the Egypt Cup in stunning fashion after a 2-1 defeat against Telecom Egypt “WE” on Saturday evening at Al Salam Stadium, in the Round of 32 of the competition.

It is worth noting that Telecom Egypt are coached by Aliyu Zubairu, the former Nigeria youth national team head coach.

Zubairu previously led Nigeria’s U-20 national team during the most recent Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, which was held in Egypt, where he guided the Young Eagles to a bronze medal. That achievement secured Nigeria’s qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Al Ahly appeared on course for qualification after taking the lead late in the first half. In the 41st minute, an attacking move ended with Taher Mohamed Taher setting up Omar Kamal, who fired a first-time shot into the net to give Al Ahly a 1-0 advantage.

Telecom Egypt persistence paid off in the 81st minute when Mostafa Fawzi struck from inside the penalty area to equalize and force the match into extra time after the game ended 1-1 in regulation.

Another turning point came early in extra time. In the 95th minute, Taher Mohamed Taher received a second yellow card, followed by a red card, leaving Al Ahly to continue with ten men for the remainder of the match.

Telecom Egypt took full advantage of the numerical superiority, and in the 110th minute, Mostafa Fawzi completed his brace with a decisive goal that sealed a historic victory for his side.

The final whistle confirmed a 2-1 win for Telecom Egypt and a disastrous early exit for Al Ahly from the Egypt Cup. Telecom Egypt will now face Pharco in the Round of 16.
