Al Ittihad assistant coach reacts to Libyan Cup performance

Al Ittihad SC assistant coach Wendell Robinson has reacted to their dominant 4-1 victory over Abu Salim SC in the Libyan Cup on Sunday.

In what was coach Rulani Mokwena’s first official match in charge of the Libyan Premier League side, the visitors delivered the goods in fashion at Misrata Stadium.

South African forward Thembinkosi Lorch scored and provided an assist for two-goal hero Ahmed Al Bizi for the visitors to reach the Libyan Cup quarterfinal stage. Mutasim Garfa scored the other goal for Mokwena’s side.

In a post-match interview with Al Ittihad SC’s media, Robinson analysed their team’s performance highlighting what worked and areas that need improvement.

What Robinson observed about Al Ittihad performance

The former Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper trainer said Mokwena-led coaching panel was happy that Al Ittihad scored from different players.

He said this shows that all players are taking responsibility on the pitch, and this could prove helpful against other tricky opponents in future assignments.

“Very happy with the game today,” Robinson told the club’s media. “The performance, especially in the first half, was very good. To come away from home in difficult conditions, the pitch not the best, the team showed what they are capable of and showed the football they can play. We scored some very good goals, and the good thing is that they were different types of goals.”

How Abu Salim SC stretched Al Ittihad SC

The man who also doubles as Al Ittihad goalkeeper trainer admitted that Abu Salim SC stepped up their performance in the second half and stretched the visitors to the limit with a tactical adjustment.

“We were happy with the first half. The second half became a little bit more different. The opponent changed shape. They went more direct, used a lot of wing-play and caused us a lot us a lot of problems,” the former Sundowns assistant coach added.

“They also loaded the box on set-plays and that also caused us a lot of problems, and they were able to score a goal from one of the corner-kicks. Obviously, it is an area of our game we need to work on.

But overall, we are very happy as a new technical team to get this result we know that we have got a lot of work to get to the level that we know this team is capable of.”
