Portuguese tactician Alexandre Santos was officially announced as the new head coach at Moroccan giants AS FAR Rabat on Sunday.
Santos takes over from Frenchman Hubert Velud who was dismissed late last week. The 48-year-old spent a month-and-a-half without a club after parting ways with Tunisia Ligue 1 club CS Sfaxien. CSS had a disastrous start to the 2024-25 season under Santos in a club that was plagued by internal issues as reported on Pan-Africa Football after Santos' departure.
AS FAR, under interim coach Jamal Benouahi, won over the weekend in Morocco's top flight Botola Pro with a dramatic 3-2 victory over IR Tanger. The military club are currently in second place, twelve points back of leaders RS Berkane.
Santos will get an opportunity to lead the club to continental glory with AS FAR's qualification to the quarterfinals of the CAF Champions League under Velud. His first assignment will be a difficult one on February 15 when AS FAR face Rabat rivals Fath Union Sport in the Moroccan capital's fiercest derby.
