MC Alger moved into top spot in the Algeria Ligue 1 Professionnelle on Thursday after substitute Soufiane Bayazid scored late to secure a 1-0 victory at USM Khenchela.
The striker, known for his ability to score after coming off the bench during his time at MCA, gave the reigning Algerian champions three points when he arrived at the near post to flick in Larbi Tabti’s cross in the 84th minute. Bayazid, who made his name with Khenchela before joining his current club, respectfully refused to celebrate the goal.
MCA have now won their last five league matches since a scoreless draw with rivals USM Alger to begin the 2025-26 campaign. The club led by South African coach Rulani Mokwena did show signs of weakness last weekend when they narrowly defeated Cameroonian club Colombe Sportive via the away goals rule after being held to a 1-1 aggregate draw in the final round of qualifying for the CAF Champions League.
The 0-0 second leg result in Algiers prompted Mokwena to lash out at his players in an attempt to keep them focused for Thursday’s return to domestic league action. While MCA experienced a fierce opponent away from home, Bayazid’s goal moves “The Boss” level with JS Saoura on 16 points at the top of the table with MCA having three games in hand.
A busy stretch continues for the champions on Monday when they host JS Saoura in a top-of-the-table clash.
