Cranes goalie Alionzi reflects on gruelling AFCON prep sessions

The Uganda Cranes stepped up their build-up to the TotalEnergies AFCON 2025 with intensive training sessions in Morocco, as the squad began the demanding final phase of preparation.

Goalkeeper Alionzi Nafian admitted the opening workout came with the usual physical strain but praised the team’s focus and commitment from the very first day in camp.

“The first day is never easy. You feel the fatigue, the muscles are stiff, but we try to loosen up and push through,” Nafian explained. “It is always hard at the start, but everyone gave their best and approached the session with the right mentality.”

Beyond the physical demands, Nafian highlighted the magnitude of competing at Africa’s biggest football stage, describing AFCON as a tournament every player dreams of featuring in.

“This is the highest level of football on the continent. It has produced so many great players, and it is a special feeling to be part of the biggest game in Africa,” he noted.

The Cranes’ shot-stopper also used the moment to inspire young goalkeepers and aspiring footballers, stressing discipline, hard work and learning from role models as key pillars for success.

“They need to stay disciplined, have inspirations and follow those who have played at this level. AFCON is there to inspire, and with hard work they can also reach where we are and become part of Africa’s best,” Nafian added.

Uganda will continue fine-tuning in Morocco as part of their final preparations. The Cranes already drew 2–2 with Moroccan side FAR Rabat on 13 December and will face Gabon on 17 December in their last buildup test ahead of the continental showpiece.
