Alisson Becker: ‘Salah’s exclusion is a result of what he did’

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has spoken about Mohamed Salah’s situation with manager Arne Slot, after the Egyptian star was left out of the squad travelling to face Inter in the UEFA Champions League.

The club announced its squad list for the match, with Salah notably omitted following his post-match comments after the Leeds United game. Salah had expressed unsatisfaction, saying he felt “thrown under the bus” and confirming a breakdown in his relationship with the Dutch coach, who had benched him for the third consecutive match.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference, Alisson described the atmosphere around the situation:

“It’s not easy. As a group, we’re dealing with him the best way we can. I’ve known Mo since I came to Europe — one year in Rome and seven years here at Liverpool,” he said.

Alisson continued by praising Salah’s character and legacy at the club:

“He’s a great person, a great character, and a Liverpool legend. We’ve achieved so much together. On a personal level, this situation doesn’t make me happy, but in football you don’t have much time to dwell on things. We have a big challenge tomorrow against a big team.”

The Brazilian goalkeeper acknowledged that Salah’s absence stems from his own actions:

“His unavailability is a result of what he did, and he’s smart enough to know that. I’ll have a conversation with him, but privately — this is a personal matter.”

Alisson also highlighted the bond he shares with Salah:

“I haven’t spoken to him in the way I want to yet. We have a good relationship — he’s not just a teammate. We spend a lot of time together. We’re close friends and we’ve shared many moments, both happy and sad, and that creates a strong connection.”

Despite the tension, Alisson expressed hope for a settlement:

“I hope he plays for the club again. But ultimately, it’s between Mo and the club. As teammates and friends, we want the best for him. As Liverpool players, we want what’s best for the club — a solution that works for both sides. My relationship with the manager is good.”
