Manchester United winger Amad Diallo was the center of controversy in Malaysia after the Ivorian was caught making an obscene gesture at onlookers during United's tour of the Southeast Asian country.
Outside of the team's hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Diallo responded to the crowd as United players walked by, prompting social media buzz as the club defended the Ivorian for his response. United clarified that abuse directed towards Diallo was not racist but was due to "serious personal abuse" relating to his mother.
Diallo went on his social media to confirm United's explanation: I have respect for people but not for the one who insults my mom… I shouldn't have reacted like that but I don't regret what I did."
United are on their first tour of the country since 2009 and it has not gone smoothly. The Red Devils lost 0-1 to a select team composed of players based in the ASEAN region after another disappointing season that saw United come up short in the UEFA Europa League final with a defeat to fellow English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
