Saturday’s Betway Premiership action delivered mixed fortunes and shifts on the log table, most notably seeing Siwelele FC’s unbeaten streak snapped by a clinical AmaZulu FC, while Sekhukhune United climbed into the top three despite a late rally from Marumo Gallants.
AmaZulu FC secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Siwelele FC at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, bringing the visitors’ four-match unbeaten run to an abrupt halt. Athini Maqokolo was the hero for Usuthu, scoring a brace to propel his side up to fifth place on the log with 21 points.

The Bloemfontein side dominated much of the first half, but their season-long struggle for goals continued, with goalkeeper Darren Johnson only troubled by weak efforts from Siviwe Magidigidi and Christian Saile. AmaZulu capitalised just before the break when a swift counter-attack saw Hendrick Ekstein set up Maqokolo, who delivered a delightful chip over the advancing Ricardo Goss in the 45th minute.
Siwelele’s woes were compounded in the second half. Sloppy play by Grant Margeman and Thabo Makhele in their own half allowed Maqokolo to pounce again in the 73rd minute, securing his double and the three points for the home side. The defeat was Siwelele’s ninth match across all competitions this season in which they failed to score, leaving them stranded in 10th position.
In the evening fixture, Sekhukhune United moved into an impressive third spot on the Premiership table despite being held to a 1-1 draw by a determined Marumo Gallants.
After a tense opening half, Babina Noko drew first blood when Ellis Rammala connected with a Vusimuzi Mncube delivery to beat Washington Arubi. Gallants, with Eroine Agnikoi returning to their lineup, struggled to find the target early on, with an Mpho Chabatsane free-kick sailing wide. Sekhukhune threatened to extend their lead when Bradley Grobler skimmed the crossbar with a header.
However, the home team fought back, primarily through the efforts of former Orlando Pirates midfielder Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo. Having gone close with a free-kick earlier, Ndlondlo finally delivered the equaliser with 14 minutes remaining, latching onto a pass from Katlego Otladisa to find the back of the net. The goal injected renewed energy into Gallants, but neither side could find the winner in the frantic final moments, settling for a point apiece.
