Amorim dismisses Onana injury concerns despite Arsenal absence

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has clarified that Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana is not carrying an injury, despite missing out on the Premier League opener against Arsenal.

United fell 1-0 to the Gunners in their first league match of the season at Old Trafford, but the talking point before the game was Onana’s absence from the squad. Reports in The Telegraph earlier this summer suggested the Cameroonian goalkeeper had suffered a hamstring issue during pre-season, with estimates of a six-to-eight week layoff — potentially ruling him out of the season start altogether.

Amorim, however, moved quickly to dispel those concerns. Speaking to reporters ahead of the match, the Portuguese coach explained:

“Onana is not injured. He recovered normally from the problem he had, but other players performed very well in pre-season. I have to find the right balance for the team.”

The manager added that selection decisions could shift in upcoming fixtures: “My choices may change for the next game.”

For now, United’s goalkeeping options include Turkish international Altay Bayındır and veteran Tom Heaton, both of whom remain available for Amorim’s plans.
