Amrabat joins Morocco camp early as Real Betis president defends his professionalism

Sofyan Amrabat will join the Morocco national team earlier than originally expected as preparations intensify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Although FIFA regulations allow clubs to retain AFCON-bound players until 15 December — one week before the tournament kicks off — Real Betis have granted Amrabat early release. The midfielder is still recovering from injury and will not feature in Thursday’s UEFA Europa League clash against Dinamo Zagreb, prompting the club to approve his immediate departure to the national camp.

Real Betis president Ángel Haro strongly defended the Moroccan international, dismissing any doubts about the player’s professionalism.
“Any question about Amrabat’s professionalism is out of the question,” Haro said. “He has now joined his national team, which is important for him as well. If he were able to play our matches, he would do so without hesitation.”

Haro continued: “His importance to the team is obvious and beyond debate. His absence is solely due to injury, not negligence or disagreements.”

He concluded: “I think he is a fantastic player who gives us a lot in midfield and never disappoints.”

Uncertainty remains over the arrival date of fellow Moroccan international Abde Ezzalzouli. Betis are scheduled to face Rayo Vallecano on 15 December, and reports indicate the club has requested that the Moroccan Football Federation delay Ezzalzouli’s release by one day.

The Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Morocco on 21 December and runs until 18 January 2026.
