Royal Anderlecht legend Yaw Preko has expressed sadness over the recurrent injury of Ghana international Majeed Ashimeru.

According to the former Ghana winger, Ashimeru has every potential to succeed at the top level but the incessant grapple with niggling injuries has slowed his progress.

The 27-year-old, it would be recalled pulled out of the Black Stars last two AFCON qualifiers against Angola and Niger where they drew 1-1 with the former and a 2-1 loss with the latter in Luanda and Accra.

Prior to that withdrawal, the devout Muslim was excluded from the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad against Mali and Central Africa Republic earlier in May. Preko, who sharpened his skills at Anderlecht’s youth side before spending seven seasons at the senior level, spoke to Pan-Africa Football.

"Very unfortunate for him because anytime I watch play, I see him as one of the best midfielders we have but injuries are not permitting us to see his full potentials. I think Anderlecht are managing his injury level but it’s different when it comes to the national assignment and you cannot be managed like it happens at club level.

“I feel sad for him because he plays for one of the best clubs in Europe and Anderlecht is the gateway to other big European clubs.

"I thought when he broke into the first 11 of the senior side, it was a fine opportunity to get to one of the top European clubs to challenge himself but unfortunately injuries are hampering his progress.

"He is struggling to find his feet, when he moves one step forward then he moves two steps backwards. "That is a very disturbing issue and I think we need to pray for injury free for Majeed Ashimeru."

At the national team level, Ashimeru has 10 caps but is yet to score for the four time African champions in any competitive game.  Ashimeru was nurtured by the then Ghana Premier League side, West Africa Football Academy before transferring to Redbull Salzburg in 2017. He had loan spells across Austria Lustenau, Wolfsberger in Austria and St Gallen of Switzerland before settling properly at Anderlecht.

He has made 10 appearances out of the 15 games played in the Belgium Pro League, scoring just a goal with no assist.
