Andre Anguissa: Napoli midfielder’s return from injury remains mystery

The injury situation of Cameroon midfielder Andre Zambo-Anguissa has left Italian Serie A side Napoli in a dilemma as his return from the sidelines remains a mystery.

The Cameroonian has been absent since November 9, and Napoli’s medical staff has yet to get to the bottom of the back problem hounding the midfielder.

Zambo Anguissa, 30 , suffered a high-grade thigh injury while training with the national side during the November international break and was billed to return in the first week of March, however further examinations have proved otherwise.

Napoli manager, Antonio Conte confirmed in a press conference that the sturdy midfielder is battling with a back problem. “Anguissa has a back problem and the doctors can’t manage to resolve it.”

According to reports in Naples, the former Fulham FC midfielder is suffering from a lumbar hernia and the problem is causing reflexes and discomfort in the leg, preventing him from giving his utmost on the field of play sending signals of a delay in his return from injury.

He has made 11 appearances with four goals and two assists as Napoli sit in 3rd on 49 points, nine behind leaders Inter Milan from 24 league games.

He was not selected for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations due to the injury as the Indomitable Lions exited at the quarter final stage following a 2-0 loss to hosts Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

He joined Napoli from Fulham FC after previously playing for Villarreal, Olympique Marseille and Stade Reims and Coton Sport back home.

He has collected 66 international caps with five goals under his belt and was a member of the Cameroon squad that placed third in 2021 on home soil. His club records include two Serie A titles with Napoli and a Europa League runner-up medal in 2018 with Olympique Marseille.
