Meanwhile, another Ghana international turned in an eye catching performance as Augustine Boakye grabbed a brace to help AS Saint-Étienne defeat Reims 3-1 at the Stade Geoffroy Guichard on Saturday.
In Marseille's victory, Valentin Rongier put the hosts ahead in the 25th minute before Bilal Nadir doubled their lead in the 39th minute. Neal Maupay grabbed the third in the 43rd minute to ensure Marseille went into the half-time break with a healthy 3-0 advantage.
On resumption, Elye Wahi made it 4-0 in the 66th minute before Ulisses Garcia scored the fifth in the 75th minute. However, Le Havre managed a consolation when Ayew scored in the 85th minute against his former club.
Speaking after the game, Ayew thanked Marseille fans for singing his name throughout the game.
On ovation by Marseille’s fans Ayew, who has managed nine appearances for Le Havre scoring one goal said: “Honestly, I want to thank all the people of Marseille. I am touched from the bottom of my heart. This club has given me so much. After the Padre, everything he has done, I have left my mark. It has always been my dream club.”
On Saturday, Boakye scored twice in the opening fifteen minutes of the second half to help Saint-Étienne register a comeback 3-1 victory against Stade Reims. The 24-year-old went 74 minutes in his first appearance since late November following some time out due to injury.
Boakye arrived for €3 million ahead of the 2024-25 Ligue 1 season from Austrian Bundesliga club Wolfsberger where he registered career highs of 10 goals and 6 assists in 27 matches during the 2023-24 season. The Ashanti Region-born attacking midfielder began his career at West African Football Academy (WAFA) in Ghana where he led their Ghana Premier League club to a third place finish in the 2020-21 season.
