Andre Onana comments on ‘United’s team-mates role

On-loan Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has explained the reason behind his return to form at Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor.

In what could be interpreted as meaning he lacked much support at Old Trafford, the Cameroonian emphasised the role of team mates in his improved performances between the sticks.

“As I always say, most of the time, it’s my teammates who give me the options when I’m building up the game,” Onana is quoted saying by Sporx via Sport Witness. “If they help me, the work looks much better.”

The Africa Cup of Nations winner then explained the decision making process that informs his tendency to build up play from the back as a modern sweeper keeper.

“If I have to create a play, I analyse it first. Are the opponents pressing, are they pressing with their wingers, are they pressing with their strikers, or are their centre-backs coming forward?” Onana explained.

“These are the things I need to see when I have the ball. I watch how the opponents are moving and then I look at the options and make my decision. Of course, it’s always great to hear a comment like that from Pep Guardiola. He’s one of the best managers in the history of football.”

The former Inter Milan player secured a loan move to Trabzonspor, ending his nightmare stay at the Premier League club where he was prone to making blunders.

The Indomitable Lions’ number one has found his feet in Turkey, securing his club four league victories on the spin, heightening talk that he could sign a permanent contract for Trabzonspor who sit second in the standings.

Onana has featured in six of the 13 games Trabzonspor have played in the league and has won hearts with his play from the back and shot handling.

Meanwhile, United appear to have moved on having handed the first-choice jersey to Senne Lammens.
