Andre Onana advised against returning to Manchester United

Former Cameroon goalkeeper Joseph Antoine-Bell has advised Andre Onana against returning to English Premier League club, Manchester United.

Onana, who is under contract with the Red Devils until June 2028, is currently on loan at Turkish outfit Trabzonspor until June this year.

The former Ajax and Inter Milan shot stopper is considering a return to the side he helped win the FA Cup in 2023 but Joseph-Antoine Bell has given his clear opinion on the Indomitable Lion’s goalkeeper.

According to him, the 29-year-old goalkeeper would be making a mistake by returning to Manchester United.

“According to Ruben Amorim, the former Red Devils manager, and others, it was solely Onana’s fault.

“He obviously had his share of responsibility, like the entire team, but to make him the scapegoat was completely unfair and wrong.

“He was right to go on loan to Turkey, once it was made clear to him that he wasn’t in their plans. At Manchester United, it was no longer a viable option.

“At least at Trabzonspor, he seems more at ease, in a club with less media exposure, and I think that’s doing him a lot of good.

“Carrick, if the current starter continues to perform well, won’t weaken him by putting Onana in competition for a strategic position where United’s various managers have changed a lot in the last two years.

“In my opinion, even if Onana might want to return to Manchester, I don’t think it’s the best solution for him,” he told Africafoot.

The 29-year-old has been in fine form since arriving at Trabzonspor on loan from Manchester United last year.

He has racked up 23 games this season but has conceded a whopping 28 goals with six clean sheets for Trabzonspor who sit 3rd on the league table with 60 points from 27 games.

Onana, who has chalked massive success at Ajax, Inter Milan and Manchester United, has 53 caps for Cameroon.

His trophy cabinet has three Dutch league titles with Ajax, the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana wirh Inter Milan and the 2023/24 English FA Cup he won with Manchester United.

He helped Cameroon finish third at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.
