Andre Onana: Marc Brys details Cameroon snub

Former Cameroon head coach Marc Brys has detailed why goalkeeper Andre Onana has entered the bad books of national team selectors.

Onana, who is on loan at Turkish outfit Trabzonspor from Manchester United, was dropped from the 2025 African Cup of Nations squad much to the chagrin of the Cameroon football ecosystem.

It will be recalled that at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the former Ajax keeper was sent home for questioning then coach Rigobert Song’s tactics.

Brys who recently left the post of the Indomitable Lions following a protracted misunderstanding between FECAFOOT and the Sports Ministry over his appointment, threw light on the matter.

Andre Onana was dropped from 2025 AFCON squad

“He stands up to Samuel Eto’o, the federation president, and that’s the reason he’s no longer with the national team,” Marc Brys said.

“In my opinion, he’s one of the best in Europe at his position. He has his own style, a game built on taking risks, which can sometimes surprise or annoy some people, but honestly, he has a lot of qualities.

“André is proving it in Turkey, in one of the best leagues. He fears nothing, he can succeed anywhere.

“He’ll probably have his pick. For now, the most important thing is that he keeps performing, like he has been since arriving in Turkey, continuing to help his club stay at the top of the table.” He said as quoted by AfricaFoot.
