Former footballer Keith Mweemba was elected the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president after defeating long-serving Andrew Kamanga on Friday, May 9, 2925, ending his nine-year reign.
Mweemba, a Lusaka-based practicing lawyer, collected 45 votes during the FAZ polls in Kabwe, shrugging off competition from Kamanga’s 20 votes, the association’s former general secretary, Adrian Kashala’s 17. Emmanuel Munaile got zero votes.
It is a big blow for Kamanga, who also lost his bid for a FIFA Council seat for Anglophone countries in Africa recently. The election saw Justin Mumba retaining his seat as vice president by a one-vote margin to beat Mutale Ng’andu.
The FAZ elections proceed with the polls as the only agenda of the annual general meeting (AGM) in Kabwe town.
Earlier, delegates at the AGM had agreed to focus on the elections following guidance from FIFA Senior Member Associations’ Governance Manager Ahmed Harraz.
FAZ media says Harraz advised delegates to set aside other agenda items and focus solely on the electoral process to bring closure to the 2025 FAZ election cycle.
The proposal received full support from the voting Congress comprising delegates from 10 provinces, Super League teams, National League, Women’s League clubs, and other football structures.
The reconvened AGM follows the initial session held in Livingstone in March 2025, which was suspended due to a court order.
FIFA, in consultation with CAF and FAZ, facilitated the rescheduling of the meeting to ensure compliance with governance protocols and statutes.
