Andrew Wambi resigns as Mbale Heroes chairman after top-flight setback

Andrew Wambi has officially stepped down from his position as Chairman of Mbale Heroes Football Club. The development was confirmed in a statement released on 30th June.

Wambi’s resignation comes in the wake of a tough season for Mbale Heroes, who were relegated from the Uganda Premier League after finishing bottom of the 2024/25 table—a disappointing end to their return to top-flight football after nearly two decades.

In his resignation message, Wambi cited personal reasons and a demanding schedule as key factors behind his decision.

“This decision is purely a result of personal reasons, the reality of my demanding busy schedule, and upcoming engaging commitments, which will unfortunately limit my capacity to dedicate sufficient time and attention to the club’s affairs,” he stated. Reflecting on his tenure, Wambi expressed pride in the achievements made under his leadership and the foundation laid for the club’s future.

“It has been a great honor to serve Mbale Heroes Football Club in this leadership role. I am proud of the milestones we have achieved together.”

Wambi also revealed the interim arrangements for the club’s leadership as they prepare to compete in the FUFA Big League next season.

“In the interim, and in line with the Club Constitution, I appoint the Vice Chairman Counsel Ojok Geofrey Odur and Jessica Muduwa to manage the transition, day-to-day operations of the Club, and to oversee the due process of electing new leadership.” Despite stepping down, Wambi pledged to remain close to the club in a supportive role:

“I remain fully committed to the spirit and success of the Club. I shall continue to serve in the capacity of a dedicated supporter, advisor, consultant, and well-wisher whenever called upon.”

Wambi’s tenure will be remembered for guiding Mbale Heroes back into the Uganda Premier League, a feat the club had not achieved in nearly 20 years. However, their stay in the top tier proved brief, marred by a string of poor performances that saw them relegated at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
