KCCA FC took a significant step toward reaching the 2024 Stanbic Uganda Cup final after a convincing 3-0 victory over Kataka FC in the first leg of their semi-final clash at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo.
Emmanuel Anyama was the star of the evening, scoring a brace, while Ashraf Mugume added a late third to give the ten-time Uganda Cup champions a strong advantage heading into the return leg in Mbale.
The Kasasiro Boys started the match on the front foot but were wasteful in front of goal in the opening stages. Kataka nearly capitalised on that slow start, with Muhammed Biafulo forcing a crucial save from KCCA goalkeeper Mutwalibu Mugoloofa, while Shafik Nana Kwikiriza was denied by the upright in a cagey first half.
Just before half-time, Joel Sserunjogi flicked the ball into the path of Anyama, who calmly slotted it home to break the deadlock and hand KCCA the lead at the break. Moments after the restart, Arafat Usama came close to doubling the tally after connecting with a precise cross from Kwikiriza, but his effort was narrowly off target.
However, it didn’t take long for Anyama to make it 2-0. Just four minutes into the second half, he unleashed a powerful strike from distance that flew past Kataka’s goalkeeper Chris Nsubuga. Ashraf Mugume then sealed the dominant display in the 81st minute, finishing off a well-delivered João Gabriel cross to give KCCA a comfortable cushion ahead of the second leg.
The two teams will reconvene on Sunday, May 18th, at the Mbale Municipal Stadium, where Kataka must produce a historic performance to overturn the deficit.
