Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare expressed profound disappointment following Wolverhampton Wanderers’ narrow 2-1 defeat to league leaders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, despite scoring his first English Premier League goal.
Arokodare opened his Wolves account in the keenly contested encounter, scoring the equalising goal. However, an unfortunate own goal from Yerson Mosquera later proved decisive, handing the Gunners the victory.
Speaking after the match, the Nigerian international lamented the team’s recurring difficulty in closing out games, feeling they were unlucky not to secure at least a point.
“It’s hurtful. It has been happening the whole season: we played the whole 90 minutes very good, and at the end we always concede. It is not the first time we conceded in the last minute. It’s something that we have to work on – staying focused to the last whistle. Very unlucky for us. Good goal from them, and I would say it was a little bit of poor defending from us.”
Despite the setback, Arokodare sought positives from the team’s performance against the league leaders, stressing the need to immediately shift focus to their next fixture.
“There are a lot of positives to take. We played against the best team in the league; they are at top of the table. We focus on the good and not on the bad; we go play against Brentford.”
Rob Edwards’ side remains winless in the league this season, with the own goal proving a bitter end to a match where they showed competitive spirit.
