Golden Arrows and Stellenbosch FC played to a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the Umlazi’s King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday night, in the only Betway Premiership fixture of the evening.
The result sees Abafana Bes’thende climb to eighth place on the log, while Stellies remain in 10th, part of a three-way tie on 25 points alongside TS Galaxy in ninth spot.
The encounter was a tale of two halves, with a cagey opening 45 minutes giving way to a frantic final quarter. Arrows manager Mabhuti Khenyeza made a triple tactical switch at halftime, introducing Nhlanhla Gasa, Sboniso Madonsela, and Sabelo Sithole to inject life into the home side’s attack.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 77th minute when substitute Nhlanhla Gasa unleashed a stunning right-footed strike from outside the box that flew into the high centre of the goal, leaving Sage Stephens with no chance.
However, the lead lasted only two minutes. Stellenbosch responded with immediate pressure, and in the 79th minute, Genino Palace—who had come on as an injury replacement for Ibraheem Jabaar—found the bottom left corner from the centre of the box. The equaliser was crafted by a pinpoint-headed pass from fellow substitute Wonderboy Makhubu.
Stellies pushed hard for a winner in the closing stages. Ashley Cupido, introduced in the 80th minute, forced a solid save from Edward Maova, while Mthetheleli Mthiyane saw a late long-range effort fizz just wide of the post. Despite the late pressure and a yellow card for Makhubu in the 84th minute, Arrows held firm to secure a point at home.
The draw leaves the middle of the table incredibly congested. While Arrows move into the top eight, only goal difference separates them from the chasing pack.
Key Moment: The quick-fire exchange of goals between Gasa and Palace transformed a tactical chess match into a high-octane finish, though neither side could find the decisive third goal.
