As the Betway Premiership dusts itself off following the mid-season break due to the 2025 AFCON, Kaizer Chiefs find themselves at a critical crossroads.
Tonight’s encounter against Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium (19:30 CAT) isn’t just another fixture; for Amakhosi, it is a statement of intent for a campaign that has promised much but now requires the cold currency of consistency.

Midfielder Asanele Velebayi, eager to be a bright spark since his arrival from Cape Town Spurs, believes the hiatus has served as a reset rather than a disruption. For a team sitting in fourth place with 24 points—just four adrift of the summit—the margin for error has evaporated.
“We are ready,” Velebayi insisted ahead of the clash. “The break allowed us to fine-tune, but now it’s about execution. Starting the second half of the season on a high is vital for our momentum.”
Chiefs haven’t tasted defeat in the league since mid-August, a remarkable run that has turned FNB Stadium back into a daunting trip for visiting sides. However, back-to-back goalless draws before the break against TS Galaxy and Chippa United have left fans hungry for more clinical final-third play.
The history books favor the Glamour Boys tonight. Amakhosi edged Abafana Bes’thende 1-0 earlier this season, and they will look to that narrow victory as a blueprint for breaking down a stubborn Arrows defense.
While Chiefs are looking to climb into the title conversation, Golden Arrows are desperate to stop a freefall. Abafana Bes’thende closed out 2025 with three consecutive defeats, sliding down to 10th in the standings. With 16 points from 14 games, the Durban-based side is effectively fighting to stay in the top-half conversation.
For Velebayi, who has settled into the Chiefs’ engine room with ease, the goal is simple: ensure the transition from the break to the pitch is seamless.
“The character of this team is stronger than it was a year ago,” Velebayi noted. “We’ve walked a more hopeful path this season. Now, we have to prove we can stay on it.”
