The 31-year-old veteran was one of the more in demand free agents after a strong 2024-25 season with Turkish giants Besiktas. Masuaku left his previous club after contributing a goal and ten assists in 47 appearances across all competitions.

The French-born defender returns to the Premier League after three seasons at Besiktas and offers an option on the left flank who is well known for his ability to support the attack. A former Valenciennes and Olympiacos player, Masuaku also made over 100 Premier League appearances at West Ham United over six seasons from 2016-2022.

Masuaku is the latest African international to join the Black Cats. Sunderland brought in five other players who represent African national teams including Habib Diarra of Senegal, Ivory Coast winger Simon Adingra, Mozambique defender Reinildo Mandava, Masuaku’s DR Congo teammate Noah Sadiki and rising Moroccan talent Chemsdine Talbi.

Sunderland finish their preseason on Sunday with a friendly against Spanish side Rayo Vallecano before making their return to the Premier League on August 16 at home against Masuaku’s former club, West Ham United.
